ASEAN BARED GROUND DOVE FESTIVAL
March 2-8 , Yala
Dove-lovers from all over Thailand, as well as from
other countries in the region, including Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia,
come to Yala for this event. The highlight is a dovecooing contest involving
more than 1,400 competitors; young prize doves are on dale along with local
products and sports contests are held.

Held in one of Thailand's most scenic areas, this

The traditional Thai New Year is an occasion for

religious ceremonies and public festivities.

to get a thorough soaking, but all in a spirit of fun, and welcome at the
peak of the hot season.
BUN BANGFAI ROCKET FESTIVAL
May 9-10 , Yasothon
For this annual festival, villagers of the Northeast
fashion rockets of all kinds, some of them several metres long,the launching
of which is believed to ensure plentiful rains during the forthcoming rice-planting
season. High-spirited revelry accompanies the event with beauty pardes,
folk dancing, and stage shows.
ROYAL RLOUGHING CEREMONY
May 8 , Bangkok
An ancient Brahman ritual, this celebrates the official
commencement of the riceplanting season and is held at Sanam Luang, the
large field across from the Grand Palace. Colourful costumes are worn by
the participants who perform various ceremonies which are believed to forecast
the abundance of the next rice crop.
PHI TA KHON FESTIVAL
June 14-15 , Loei
The festival has its origin in a traditional Buddhist
tale. When Prince Ves-sandorn,the Buddha's penultimate incarnation, returned
to his city, the welcoming procession was so delightful sthat sp8irits
emerged to celebrate. Phi Ta Khon is celebrted largely by young men who
dress as spirits to parade a sacred Buddha image and tease villagers. Monks
recite the story of the Buddha's last great incarnation before attaining
Enlightenment.
CANDLE FESTIVAL
Ubon Ratchathani
The commencement (known in Thai as Khao Phansa)
ia observed in the northeastern city of Ubon Ratchathani with this lovely
Beautifully carved beeswax candles, some of them several metres tall, are
exhibited in colourful parades before being presented to local temples
H.M. THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

Throughout Thailand, public buildings are decorated
to honour Her Majesty Queen Sirikit on the occasion of her birthday. The
most splendid are to be seen in Bangkok, particularly along Ratchadamnoen
Avenue and in the area around the Grand Palace, where both government offices
and streets are garlanded with coloured lights.
KORLAE BOAT RACING & NARATHIWAT PRODUCE
FESTIVAL
September 21-25 , Narathiwat
Staged at the Bangnara River, the festival features
boat racing and dove cooing contests, and the sale of Narathiwat produce,
including longans, bulrush(Genus Scirpus) products and other local handicrafts.
CHON BURI BUFFALO RACES
October 4 , Chon Buri
The water buffalo is one of the mainstays in the
life of a Thai farmer, but in this annual event it is put to moreamusing
uses than ploughing local fields, namely in buffalo races adn contests
pitting buffalo against man. Beauty contests add to the fun of a festival
that attracts crowds from nearby seaside resorts.
PHUKET VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL
October 20-28 , Phuket
This annual festival originated anong immigrant
workers during the 19th century adn remains one of Phuket's major events.
Residents of Chinese ancestry undertake a ten-day vegetarian diet, adn
there are ceremonies at local chinese temples and parades that feature
remarkable feast by ascetic believers.
LOI KRATHONG AND CANDLE FESTIVAL
October 31- November 3 , Sukhothai
According to tradition, Loi Krathong originated
in Sukhothai, the first Thai capital, adn so it is appropriate to hold
this memorble festival in the ancient city. Highlights include displays
of lighted candles and fireworks, folk dancing, and a spectacular light
and sound presentation.
LONG BOAT INTERNATIONAL OF THAILAND 11TH
October 31- November 1 , Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya
SURIN ELEPHANT FESTIVAL
November 14-15 , Surin
Surin Elephant Show is held in the
third weekend of November. Internationally famous, this annual event brings
crowds of visitors to the provincial capital of Surin, where over 100 trained
elephants are assembled. Among the spectacular features are wild elephant
hunts, tugs of war, demonstrations of log hauling skills, and a parade
of elephants outfitted for medieval warfare.
The Bridge over the River Khwae
November 26 - December 7
This famous bridge is located about 4 kilometers
from T.A.T office, on the hank of Khwae Yai river. It was brought from
Java by the Japanese Army and was assembled at the River Khwae by the war
prisoners. Bombed several times in 1945, it was rebuilt after the war again.
The curved spans of the bridge are the original sections. An estimated
16,000 war prisoners and
49,000impressed labourers died during the construction
of the bridge and the Death-Railway line that leads to Burma.
