A Tall Cold One
Refreshing Thai tradition
The wonderful hospitality Thai people show their friends, neighbors
and even strangers is well known. and in a country where water is such an importand ever-present part of the people's lives, It's not surprising that one of
its most enduring traditions of hospitality is the water jar. Still frequently seen in the countryside, these water jars, or toom, are often placed on covered stands outside houses and shopfronts to quench the thirst of passersby.
Much larger versions are used to collect rainwater ans stored underneath
the house. The toom on the left is an ornately decorated Ayutthaya-period
piece.
